Splash Page Redesign

I, DanRasmussen, want to redesign Personal Telco's SplashPage - both the mobile, and the desktop splash pages. I'm creating this document in case I don't get around to doing so, so others know what's wrong with the existing splash pages, and can take up the cause. -- DanRasmussen 2012-05-13 11:51:24

Desktop

• I told a friend about how PTP nodes work, and that I wanted to redesign the splash page.
  • Him: "Does it say you're a nonprofit?"

    Me: "No, it doesn't!!!"

• We have a "donate" link, but don't explain what Personal Telco Project is, how nodes operate, or what their donation is for. Guessing we don't receive (m)any donations via our splash pages...

• I dislike that we have radio buttons that go to links on form submission, but we don't display those link URLs. What if a visitor wants to explore multiple options - "Sorry, not today!!"

Issues With Mobile Splash Page

• Nobody knows how "free community internet access" differs from "internet access." Splash page doesn't elucidate the difference.
• "Welcome" - Tiresome internet greeting. The splash page is not a friend. It's some files sitting on a web server.

• Personal Telco Project node - "node" ... - there we are, throwing jargon at them already! ¹

• By using this service you agree to the [2]Terms and Conditions. Have fun!
  • How about, "Use this service only if you agree to the Terms and Conditions" followed by a button, [Ok]
• "Have fun!" is just more junk we're making them read - they'd rather be on the web...
• TOS page, viewed on an Android phone, is much too small to read. Style sheet?
• Mobile splash page gives no indication PTP is anything worthwhile. Typical person viewing this page likely assumes Personal Telco Project is some anonymous corporation that likes making people read licensing agreements. Like the desktop splash page, the mobile splash page should mention we're an all-volunteer nonprofit. But let's keep the mission statement out of it. Those have a tendency to turn people off!
