Hello, I'm Keegan.

Currently I am Personal Telco's Network Engineer. I focus on building and maintaining our nodes, with the help of our network operations team.

I've been lurking and posting around the various mailing lists for several years, since before "PDX Wireless" and the Personal Telco Project become one entity - ancient history, now. Since the beginning of 2003 I've had more energy and love to contribute to the project, and hope to continue doing so for years to come.

Projects

• I have tracked, maintained, and coordinated many major public Personal Telco nodes.
• I have participated in the installation and maintenance of dozens of nodes.

• I've recorded, broadcasted, and distributed audio from the monthly meetings, between January 2003 and mid-2004. The MonthlyMeeting wiki page has more information.

• I run ["Node471"] at my parents' house and ["Node648"] at my home.

• I've packaged NoCatAuth for Debian GNU/Linux.

Recent Activity

• 2004.12.23: Late night at Jimmy's. Updated alitheia to support running X11 clients over SSH, so I can use emacs. Also did the obligatory AIDE update and dist-upgrade. Logged back into vesta to look at a couple of things, including the AIDE database - and noticed that it was running testing. testing is bad. testing has no security support. Obviously, the CA needs security support. Even unstable has better security support than unstable - so I've upgraded it. Sorry. I really don't think sarge should be used for production just yet, despite the slick installation. Managed to get the mail boxes in my home directory arranged such that Squirrelmail and the IMAP server get along well and recognize them happily - and I think my Thunderbird setup should work just the same. I need to convert my Thunderbird filters to procmail - I've resorted to filtering my mail by hand via Squirrelmail. Ideally both interfaces should work almost the same... Now I'd love to get into frank (["Node595"]) but I don't have my SSH private key handy and Jimmy doesn't have access at all. Welcome back shiva (["Node590"]) - AIDE updates and Nagios fixes provided. Also fixed monitoring for thehut (["Node640"]), cleaned up comments in the Nagios web interface, and gave Jimmy access. AIDE updates on block (["Node642"]), strongmad (["Node652"]) and temporis (["Node626"]) - same as on the 21st. Synchronized time on mississippi (["Node641"]) and phillie (["Node602"]). Still no reboots! Leaving Jimmy's to go home, just before 6:00 AM.

• 2004.12.22: Field trip day, of sorts. Connected at the Daily Double (["Node611"]) on JimmySchmierbach's iBook. Tried to log in to the node at Moonlight Staffing (["Node512"]), but failed due to the SETUP.sh bug - someone had run it multiple times. Jimmy got a tunnel up here at the Dub, as well as getting some port forwards configured for remote administration. Consequentially I updated the node's DNS entry (unnecessarily, as it turns out) and added it to Nagios. No email tonight - I'm away from my beloved Thunderbird. Poked a bit at the dynamic DNS stuff - halfway resolved RT ticket #234. Performed software updates on bone. Cross-referenced these notes to add node numbers, for convenience and to help myself learn the new ones. Fixed Squirrelmail on bone, resolving RT ticket #214. Installed postfix on vesta.

• 2004.12.21: Barely connected late at night. Caught up with email. Cleared administrative requests queue for the 'commit' mailing list. AIDE updates on block (["Node642"]), strongmad (["Node652"]) and temporis (["Node626"]), and only because their AIDE databases are still quite new - not 'broken in' yet. I'm pleased to note that none of the hosts I've been working on have rebooted in the past few days.
• 2004.12.20: Woke up this evening to find myself connected to the Internet again. Surprised. Going through email... Cleaned up dangling symlinks on bone. Cleared the administrative requests queue for the 'commit' mailing list. Read about the hack night on the 22nd - looking for a ride. Continued the 'maintenance report' thread I started yesterday, on into RT. Got into loki (["Node565"]), performed long-overdue maintenance. Cleaned up a dangling symlink on ansel (["Node624"]), another on arbor (["Node134"]), another on ballista (["Node143"]), another on cantos (["Node627"]), another on cornerstone, another on grank (["Node608"]), another on nibble (["Node563"]), another on thehut (["Node640"]), another on zeus (["Node566"]). Performed AIDE updates on afterthought (["Node578"]), ballista (["Node143"]), block (["Node642"]), circe (["Node536"]), filth (["Node562"]), frack (["Node113"]), melarky (["Node586"]), strongmad (["Node652"]), stumptard (["Node583"]), temporis (["Node626"]) and yeast (["Node561"]). Sent some mail.
• 2004.12.19: I've been away from e-mail since the beginning of August. I bought a house at the end of that month, and have been quite occupied with keeping track of it since. I'm connected intermittently now, and have nearly finished parsing through the huge backlog of e-mail. Expect replies soon. I've been doing my best to get a decent overview of the progress and reliability of all of the nodes and network components, but I'm left with many questions, which I will be researching answers for and probably posting about a bit. While offline, I've been hacking on what has become of Adhocracy, and various other bits and pieces - although not as much as I'd like. I'll see if I can write more soon...
• 2004.02.17: Well. In January I was selected to be the project's official network engineer. Since my last entry, we've put up a whole lot of new nodes. ["Node561"] at Red Wing Coffee and Baking, ["Node562"] at the Cedar Hills Crossing Shopping Center, ["Node563"] at Backspace, ["Node564"] at the Ugly Mug Coffeehouse, ["Node565"] at The Crow Bar, ["Node566"] at The Basement Public House, ["Node567"] at Division 34, and ["Node568"] at Subway on Hawthorne. Whew! I've also done some serious maintenance on ["Node113"], ["Node143"], ["Node155"], and ["Node536"]. 155 has sadly gone out of business and 113 is plagued by a never-ending stream of issues, but 143 and 536 are now quite stable, as well as all of the other nodes I'm currently keeping tabs on - 19 all together, including the ones listed here. Whew again! bone has recieved quite a lot of love too lately. Generally, things are going well.

• 2003.12.03: Ecotrust, ["Node551"], has been running for 3 weeks with no issues - finally, a success story. World Cup, ["Node536"], is not doing so well, but has hope for the future. I've been putting a lot of time and energy into things like the weekly meetings, doing development for the NewCloneArmyBox hardware (in the form of the NewCloneArmyInstallMethodology), and actively deploying new nodes. Unfortunately, my most recent conquests are currently unofficial, due to not meeting all of the required criteria. I hope to resolve those issues in time.

• ...: Somewhere in here an update was lost. I've been really busy.

• 2003.06.25: The node at Couch Park, ["Node495"], is now up and running, thanks to a laptop I managed to pick up at a company auction, and the generous sponsorship of fellow member Robert Petersen. Get down there! BR

• 2003.06.09: I just installed ["Node491"] in the NW sector of downtown Portland, at TomFitz's restaurant called Capuia's. Check it out! BR

• 2003.04.23: I've recently completed construction of ["Node471"] on my roof in the Laurelhurst/Hollywood district. Hopefully it help will facilitate some inter-node linkage. BR
