All this stuff is pretty old, and mostly irrelevant, though some of the details might still be relevant or of HistoricalInterest. Suggestion: Update or Delete this. -- DanRasmussen 2012-03-08 15:13:49
Here is the place to list all of the places in and around Portland that you think would be good places to try and get unwired. It would be good to list other pertinent information about the location.
--MichaelCodanti
In The Works
- Hawthorne Area Node (in the 30's)
- Site survey being worked up and a plan formulated
Activley Being Pursued
- SE
Red & Black Cafe on Division
Need to be Pursued
- NE
- Sam's Billiards
Signal from node NodeId:79 does indeed reach. MichaelCodanti used one of his FujitsuStylistic1000's, a 15dBI sector antenna, and two 802.11b cards to provide access on a temporary basis. Some convincing still needs to be done with both the ownership of Sam's and DanRichardson (who's bandwidth we would be using).
- Lloyd Center (Food Court)
- Peet's Coffee/Tea on NE Broadway (small)
- Broadway Coffee Trader (2130 NE Broadway) offers free wireless access, someone just needs to pursuade them to add a node to the list.
- Alberta Co-Op Grocery 15th and NE Alberta
- Mid-way down Alberta, near galleries, cafes and the like. Has a cozy lounge area. Probably not a difficult idealistic sell.
- Sam's Billiards
- NW
- North Park Blocks (does anybody know the folks at Powell's Tech bookstore?)
- Burnside Bean 24th and E Burnside
- I will be pursuing after setting up my directional and switching to Easy Street
- Powell's Books (Technical store and/or coffee shop in the main store)
- N
- SE
- Lucky Lab
- They have shown some interest, but haven't followed through yet.
- Update 1/2/02 - Agreed to unwire!
- Update 3/5/02 - Still no action, newest is that managers have no idea where their one qualified phone line is actually located.
Does someone need to go down with a toner and trace the line for them?
- Update 01/21/04 Still no luvin from the Lab. A new approach might be needed. thoughts on this would be most welcome.
- They already have a donated DSL connection and have said that they will run a node as soon as someone donates the hardware.
- Snake and Weasel
ChristianSeppa said: I talked with the owner Dan and he said he'd be very interested in putting in wireless for the masses at his cafe/pub, and they've already got dsl
- Common Grounds
- I spoke w/ the owner of Common Grounds Michelle. I explained the setup and I left contact info. I am not sure how she recieved the request. There might be an ideological difference or a lack of desire to pay for DSL and ISP services. I offered to loan her an access point and a computer. I'll follow up later after some time has passed.
Scooter Station at 34th & Belmont (http://www.scooterstation.com)
I spoke with Florian, the owner. He has AT&T Broadband (which I think he'd gladly trade for a less monopolistic DSL provider), and is Internet-friendly. I explained the basic idea, the approx cost of equipment etc, the positive PR the portal page would provide... I wouldn't say he was particularly excited, but he didn't dismiss me out of hand either (of course, I was shopping for a scooter). He has a thing about cellphones and the intrusion of electronics into the human environment, but is supportive of them in the "right circumstances" obviously, since he's wired and apparently does a good trade online. I think that a better pitch with more clearly explained social benefits might win him over. He's just off Belmont, but lives upstairs so presumably has roof access. We would definitely have coverage of Stumptown, potentially IBP, Hoda's, Belmont's Inn, etc. - CatonGates (7/27/02)
- The Cricket Cafe
- Currently has DSL internet access and might be interested.
- Mojo's, SE 28th and Stark.
- True Brew coffe shop on SE Milwaukie
- The owners are very community oriented but haven't been approached yet and it is right by Brooklyn park (clean shot out their front window).
- Lucky Lab
- SW
- Peet's Coffee/Tea on SW Broadway (small)
McCall's restaurant on the bank of the Willamette River
- Might be able to cover part of Waterfront Park
- Papaccino's
- Beaverton
My Favorite Muffin & Bagel Cafe 16065 SW Walker Rd
- General
- Public libraries

For a good uptodate listing of nodes in place please head over to the NetworkAddressAllocations page as well as the http://www.personaltelco.net/static/node/index.html listing
20020214 (Node113) - Pioneer Square
- Covers the Starbucks and most of the actual paved square.
20020311 (Node143) - Hawthorne International Hostel
- Node is live, and has already been heavily used by the hostel's patrons.
20020420 PittockBlock (Node155)
20020501 South Park Blocks (Node162) - Hosted by Oaktree
- Covers about 8 blocks, from Taylor south to the PSU campus. Interesting locations include a Starbucks, an italian deli, a Quizno's, a juice bar, a couple sandwich delis, and the 2nd floor open study area in PSU Memorial Union that looks out on the park blocks.
Rose & Raindrop (RoseAndRaindrop)
- They have shown some interest, but haven't followed through yet, and are worried about holes and stuff since it is a historic building.
- The node was installed and has been running well.
Tried and Failed
- The Pied Cow
Would be totally cool, because we could cover ItsaBeautifulPizza in one go. It seems fairly reasonable that they may be interested, once pitched, unless they feel a bunch of laptops would impede discussion. --AndrewWoods
exactly, i was thinking outside would be especially nice on a summer night. --ForrestEnglish
Brad, who also owns PsychoNautical, is not interested because of table turnover - PatrickSullivan
Pied Cow is wired with a non personal telco AP as of 30Jan05 --KarlKatzke
- Stumptown
NigelBallard has approached them and they don't appear to be interested
200205?? PsychoNautical Supply at SE 25th and Belmont (Node171).
- Update 2003 - With the passing of the owner the node has ceased to be. There is a node there but it is currently running under a different ssid (pdxchng)
20020531 Billy Reed's restaurant/bar on MLK (Node176) - Hosted by Billy Reed's
- Coverage inside the restaurant, including a number a private meeting rooms, and great room downstairs where PTP might hold meetings. This node may be expanded in the future to include external antennas with coverage for the surrounding blocks.
- They are no longer a ptp node
